My guide to: The rise of "third spaces" in NYC...(no, members clubs don't count)
Spaces that you go to build community that aren't a traditional bar, restaurant, club, etc- is this trendy? Or are we actually moving away from overconsumption of the nightlife scene and fussy plans?
There are way too many viral videos circulating about new “third spaces” in New York that are literally just aesthetic restaurants. No hate to these creators- I just always thought the point of a third space was to be something different than places you frequent on a weekly basis- like your office, a restaurant, a bar, etc…
London is DOING something we’re not:

I got completely and totally enamored with this new concept I saw in London (technically is a form of a restaurant, but hear me out) that only serves wine and ice cream. Why is this perfect? It’s a low commitment place to meet a friend who wants a glass of wine when you just want a little sweet treat instead of feeling pressured to have a full on expensive dinner and reservation. It’s a meeting place for friends to start or end their night, (or frankly be the only plan of the entire night) that you can put a cute outfit on for, or not. I love how casual it is and how social it seems to be, especially because people seem to spill out on the sidewalk with their sundaes and glasses of orange.
Who wants to give me funding to open this concept in New York (hehe)? We need more low stakes meeting places that fall in between the spectrum of going to Salt and Straw in pajamas or getting fully dressed up to go to Sartiano’s for a group dinner.
“Third Spaces” in NYC to try:
Yes, most of these still cost some sort of money but I promise they’re not Happy Medium or other spots you’ve heard of 10 times
1. Apartment 5
This place operates as a “cocktail bar” but is constantly hosting activities like painting, collaging, and reading. The entire place feels like you’re in a really cool friend’s apartment and are going over to do a fun little craft and (maybe) have a drink and some fries, but you can bring your creative hobby with you. They also have a full library that you can pick through when you’re there!
